Litu Minj from Sundargarh district of Odisha is telling us that as per media reports 11 people had died on 10th August in Mahanadi coalfield Ltd. But affected people tell death toll should be 35. They say all the affected families are displaced from the mine who are yet to get compensation and was earning livelihood by picking coal and that’s how they died. He is talking to an adivasi farmer who tells him that coal companies took land of many farmers but even after nationalisation in 1972 they have not got their due compensation. Raju is visiting Karnapura area in border of Hazaribagh, Chatra and Latehar districts in Jharkhand where 32 coal companies are planning to set up mining and more than 200 villages will loose land. He says elephants started coming to villages from 2003 and people are demanding elephant corridor since then but Govt is more interested in opening coal mines. 27 elephants have died since and govt has paid more than Rs 4 crore in compensation.
