She says people need money as the monsoon is arriving and they need to buy seeds and also need to send children to school. Shankarlal Raikwar from Lalitpur district in Uttar Pradesh says NREGA was created to help the poor but in many cases that is not happening. He mentions a case where Sarpanch and secretary of a village has withdrawn the wages of 2 families and when they tried to complain they were threatenend that their houses will be burnt. Today 2 families have come to complain to collector but past experience of similar complaints tell us that administration has not done anything even when the complaints were found true. 20 Baiga adivasis today walked 35 kms through hills to Kota in Bilaspur district in Chhattisgrh to ask about wages for NREGA work they did 6 months ago with some volunteers from Navrachna Samaj Sevi Sanstha. First Program Officer Reena Yadav told them money has been sent to post office. When they demanded this in writing she refused. Shivram Sonwanifrom Sitapur block of Chhattisgarh says that around 200 workers have decided to go for direct action from 29th June if there NREGA wages are not paid before. These workers are waiting for their payment from 2009-10. In a meeting today they have decided to lock the block office and start a hunder fast from that day. Bindeshwari Painkra from Kachnar Adivasi Samiti in Surguja says they had done a survey in February which showed that NREGA wages are due from 6 months to one year. Since then minister and secretary has promised for speedy wage payment. But today he is visiting a village called Mangari where more than 50 people have not been paid their wages for more than a year and are planning to go to city in search of work.
