एक जंगल में एक शेर सभी जानवरों को मार कर खाता था| एक दिन सभी जानवर जंगल में बैठकर विचार किये, कि हर रोज उन में से एक शेर के भोजन के लिए जायेगा, उसके बाद ऐसा ही होने लगा, फिर एक दिन खरगोश का नंबर आया| खरगोश बहुत चालक था, वह धीरे-धीरे दोपहर के बाद शेर के पास पंहुचा| तब बहुत देर हो चुका था, और शेर भूख से गुस्सा हुये जा रहा था, खरगोश के आते ही शेर गुस्से से पूछा कहाँ थे, खरगोश बोला हुजूर मै सुबह ही आपके लिये निकल पडी थी, मगर रास्ते में और एक शेर आकर मुझे मारने लगा| ‘’यह बात सुनकर शेर को गुस्सा आया, और कहा कि इस जंगल में सिर्फ मैं राजा हूँ, दिखाओ उसे ‘’ऐसा कह कर वे दोनों एक कुआ के पास गये, शेर कुआ में अपनी प्रतिबिंब देखकर दूसरा शेर समझकर, उसे मारने को कुएँ में कूद पडा और डूबकर मर गया, फिर जंगल में सब जानवर सुख से रहने लगे|
